Winter Storm Information
Winter storms can have lasting damage to our homes and community. Severe weather can happen anytime, in any part of the country. Severe weather can include hazardous conditions produced by thunderstorms, including damaging winds, flooding, flash flooding, and winter storms. Develop an emergency plan based on our local weather hazards and practice your plan.
See the below information for some tips on how you can prepare for winter storms.
- Keep an emergency kit with a battery-operated radio, flashlights, extra batteries, and a first-aid kit.
- Stock easy-to-open prepared foods, a can opener, bottled water and pet food in case of a power outage. Keep extra blankets and warm clothes in a safe dry place.
- Put a plan together. Visit ready.gov to learn more on how to prepare.

We can help prevent street flooding by removing leaves and keeping storm drains clear. Place fallen leaves in your organic green container, or in a pile to be collected by our street sweeping crew. Leaves must be piled 18 inches away from the curb to allow rain to pass through to the storm drains.

StanAware is the Stanislaus County Office of Emergency Services communications system that allows the public to be contacted directly in case of a large-scale emergency and keeps residents informed in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Follow the City's social media accounts. During a storm or emergency, updates will be posted on these. We have accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, and Twitter.
Power outages may occur during stormy weather. To report an electrical outage or downed power lines, call Modesto Irrigation District (MID) at 209-526-7337 or 888-335-1643 (say or press "3") or visit the MID website. If you live outside the City of Modesto, contact Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E).
If you see a downed power line, do not touch it. Assume it is dangerous and call 9-1-1 immediately.
To report emergency downed City trees and tree limbs, call 209-342-2253. For non-emergencies submit online report for City tree issues.
During a storm, do not walk or drive past barricades or signs warning of flooded areas.
To report localized emergency street flooding, call Modesto Utilities Department at 209-577-6200. This line is staffed 24/7.
Sandbags
The City of Modesto opens sandbag pickup location when potential flooding is predicted.
Pick Up Information
To have sandbags readily available for your property, you may pick up no more than twenty (20) sandbags per household. We ask that you bring your own shovel to fill your sandbags.
They are available free to City of Modesto residents at: South-West corner of Elm and North Washington.

If you observe local drainage issues, you’re encouraged to report them. Contact Modesto Utilities Department by calling 209-577-6200.
Outside of Modesto City Limits

The City of Modesto Parks and Trails may be temporary closed due to flooding and community safety concerns. Use caution and never enter a water covered area.
