Lateral Entry
The Lateral Police Officer position is available for candidates who have a valid California Basic Peace Officer standards and Training (POST) Certificate and have at least one year experience with their current California law enforcement agency.
The Lateral Police Officer is responsible to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local municipal codes, violations, and traffic regulations; to perform investigative work; to participate in and provide support and assistance to special crime prevention and enforcement programs; and to perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the department.
Hiring Incentives
Lateral Hiring Incentive Pay
Currently, the Lateral Police Officer Hiring Incentive is $20,000; paid $5,000 at date of hire, $5,000 at the time of successful completion of the field training program, $5,000 at the end of their probationary period, and $5,000 upon completion of their two-year anniversary. (A repayment schedule for this incentive is in place, should the employee leave prior to the end of their 5th year of employment.)
Lateral Service Credit
Any lateral hire to any position assigned to the Police Department (sworn or non-sworn/professional) will accrue leave balances based on their years of experience in a prior public safety position.
Upfront Sick and Vacation Leave
Lateral Police Officer will have 40 hours of sick and 40 hours of vacation time placed in their leave balances upon date of hire.
However, the employee would not accrue additional time until their time at the department equaled the accrual of 40 hours of each, based on their accrual rate. The sick leave hours are not cashable at any point and the vacation hours would not be cashable until such a time as the employee would have accrued the time. There are no expiration dates on either leave type. There is no repayment schedule for this incentive.
Military Additional Hiring Incentive Pay
Currently, the Sworn Military Hiring Incentive is $5,000 for those who have served in any branch of the United States Military and received an Honorable or General Discharge as denoted on the DD214. For Lateral Police Officer, $2,500 would be paid upon date of hire, and $2,500 would be paid after completion of the Probationary Period.
