City of Modesto Policy on the Acceptance of Gifts and Gratuities
Employees should be sensitive at all times to their position of trust as a public employee and the fact that certain acts or activities could be construed as having some impact on the employee’s judgment with regard to their responsibilities with the City of Modesto. Employees are not to accept any gifts or gratuity from an individual, company, or organization doing business with the City of Modesto.
An employee should avoid the appearance of impropriety and should not perform any act, which appears improper even though it may be legal. Any gift offered by an outside party should be politely, but firmly declined.
There may be occasions when a gratuity is given to a department, section or group of employees, such as a box of candy at Christmas time. It is the policy of the City of Modesto that if the box is opened and consumed at the job site by all employees involved, that action is acceptable. However, if the same box were taken home by an employee, then the action becomes unacceptable.
Years of conscientious effort by City of Modesto employees to build and maintain a favorable public image can be seriously damaged by one act of poor judgment. Employees should be sensitive at all times to their position of trust as a public employee and the fact that certain acts or activities could be construed as having conflicts of interest.
