What are nitrates?

Nitrates are naturally occurring chemical compounds. One of the most important urban water quality concerns is nitrate contamination of potable water sources. The maximum contaminant level (MCL) for nitrate is 10 milligrams per liter (Mg/L) as nitrogen (N). More information regarding nitrates and California regulations is available on the California Water Boards website.
